A celebration of World Refugee Day featuring keynote speakers, live music, short films, exhibitions and the declaration of Hull as a City of Sanctuary.

Hull’s declaration as a full City of Sanctuary will be made by local refugee, Salmen, and will be received on behalf of the citizens of Hull by the current Lord Mayor.

The event will be hosted by refugees including Busalama, a young refugee originally from Congo.
Prestigious speakers will also include Baroness D’Souza, former Lord Speaker of the House of Lords, Sabir Zazai, Chair of City of Sanctuary, Nahro Zagros, who found sanctuary in Hull and is now Vice President of Soran Unversity, and Chair of Hull 2017 Rosie Millard.

Exhibitions will include work by Hull group Knitters for Peace, Rock Against Racism posters going back to the 1970s and photographs from previous Hull Refugee Week events.

A variety of Hull organisations are involved in World Refugee Day in Hull. These include the Warren, Open Doors, British Red Cross, Refugee Council and Community Integration and Advocacy Centre (CIAC).

UK Celebration of World Refugee Day is part of the Hull 2017 UK City of Culture schedule and is funded by the Creative Communities Programme under the Big Lottery Fund and the Tribune Trust.
