The Minster church of St Peter is the historic parish church of the city of Leeds, and is the latest church to stand on a site that has housed a place of worship since ancient times.
The medieval church stood as the spiritual heart of the growing city until in 1837 it was judged as being inadequate to satisfy the needs of a city of over 150,000 people. An expansion was started which resulted in a complete rebuild, and the construction of the largest church that had been built in England since St Paul’s Cathedral.
The star attraction at Leeds Minster is a testament to the long history of Christian worship on the site. The Leeds Cross is one of several Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian crosses salvaged from the walls of the medieval church’s tower. The Leeds Cross is the largest and most elaborate and its beautiful 10th-century carvings tell the story of Weyland Smith, the Anglo-Saxon folk hero.

Leeds Minster opens for Heritage Open Days
