World War 1 Weekend at St Stephen's Parish Church Fylingdales on the 24th and 25th June 2017.

On the 24th and 25th June the village of Robin Hood's Bay will be celebrating those from the village who lost their lives in World War 1. Saturday 25th June is the centenary of the death of Richard Duck who was a bellringer at the church, as was John William Lowther who was killed on the 15th April 2018. To commemorate the centenary and death of both men a team of four bellringers from Cleveland and North Yorkshire will be ringing a peal on handbells in the church.

Throughout the weekend there will be exhibitions in church, not only of those who died, but of all that lived in the village and fought in the war. Alongside this will be displays of life in the village at that time and a cascade of knitted poppies made by people in the village and the brownies. There will be a trail around the village of the homes of those who fought, and graves will be identified in the churchyard. There will also be an opportunity for people to remember family members who did not come from the area.

On Saturday, the 24th there will be a barbecue in the church grounds at which the Archbishop of York will be present and will give a short talk on his experiences of sacrifice. In the evening Jenny Hill, a local poet and singer, will present a reading of her poems based on memories of real people and some songs of the period
The peal will be rung on Sunday 25th at 1.30 and will last about 2 and a half hours. The weekend will conclude with a Service of Remembrance led by the vicar, the Revd Simon Smale.
