100th Anniversary of the Death of the 2nd Earl of Feversham
The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is to join the Feversham family and parishioners for the Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Lieutenant-Colonel Charles William Reginald Duncombe, 2nd Earl of Feversham.
The service of commemoration and thanksgiving is to take place at All Saints Church Helmsley YO62 5AQ on Saturday 17 September at 11.30am – all are welcome to attend.
Lady Clarissa, the 2nd Earl of Feversham’s granddaughter said: “We hope that this occasion will be a fitting tribute to my grandfather and all those who fought at the Somme one hundred years ago. We owe them our life and liberty”.
Archbishop Sentamu said: “As we look at the world a hundred years on, we have much to be thankful for and much to ask the Lord for forgiveness. Europe, though facing many challenges, is at peace, and enjoying a prosperity unimaginable a century ago. We must never forget the loss of so many young lives in the senseless brutality of the First World War. Nor may we ever be complacent about the need for building bridges of understanding and cooperation between peoples and nations. Wherever we are in the world we are all invited to share in a bigger vision, as we seek to follow Jesus Christ, who laid down his life for his friends, and who rose from the dead that all might have new life in all its fullness. Let us strive to build bridges and not walls of partition already broken down by the Cross of Christ. We all live in one global village”.
From the Helmsley War Memorial Book, compiled by Ryedale Family History Group: An NCO wrote (of Lord Feversham’s death): “He was absolutely the finest officer I have ever served under. The men would have done anything for him. It was unadulterated hell where we were. He told us very briefly of what was expected of us and then he walked quietly in to action at the head of the men. The men responded to his call with a ringing cheer and swept on like a whirlwind. Then he dropped without a word and rolled over. The men then halted long enough to know the worst and then they dashed forward once more with sorrow and vengeance in their hearts”.
