150 Years Anniversary at The Church of the Epiphany, Tockwith
The Church of the Epiphany, Tockwith, is celebrating 150 years since its consecration as a place of worship over the weekend of 8 and 9 October. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday October 9 at 11am, and all are welcome to attend.
The Revd Roy Shaw, Vicar of Tockwith said “This promises to be a great weekend, as we look back on 150 years of serving our community, and give ourselves in gratitude to continued service to God, thankful for all He has done with us and through us. There might even be one or two surprises over the weekend!”
Prior to 1866, parishioners had a two mile walk to Bilton in Ainsty for church. Since then, says Roy, “Tockwith church has tried to be very much at the heart of the village - a place it certainly occupies today.”
Archbishop Sentamu said, “It is wonderful to be part of the celebrations at Tockwith – 150 years not out! At the Epiphany we celebrate God revealing himself to the world through the visit of the Magi to the Infant Jesus Christ. It is great to see churches and people continuing to make Christ known in their local area. May all at Tockwith flourish as they share the Good News of Jesus Christ with all.”
As part of the celebrations, on Saturday 8October, from 5pm to 7pm, there is a party in church for families and younger members, and from 7pm there will be music and entertainment. Orders are also now being taken for celebratory ‘Epiphany Ale’ produced by a local brewery.
