Archbishop Believes in Hull

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu will be preaching at a special service on the Quayside in Hull to commemorate trawlermen lost at sea as part of his third deanery mission weekend from 10 to 12 February 2017.

The Archbishop said, “I am looking forward to returning to Hull for this weekend of mission. I never tire of telling the marvellous story of Jesus Christ and how knowing him and his love can transform lives whatever situations we face. I want to encourage all to come along and to invite their friends, family and work colleagues to hear for themselves about the love of God as seen in Jesus Christ. This is amazing news of hope - don’t miss out!”

On Friday morning, the Archbishop starts off the mission with a visit to Acre Heads Primary School and later will call in at St Mark's Preschool, and onto Springhead Primary School in the afternoon where he will meet with pupils, lead assemblies and take part in Q & A sessions.

At 6pm on Friday, the Archbishop will be joining the Men’s and Boys’ Club at the Kirk Ella Memorial Hall to share his faith journey, and will later meet with young people exploring faith at the Youth Club from 7.30pm onwards.

Saturday begins at 8.30am with a ‘Big Breakfast with the Archbish’ at Frankie and Benny’s. This is followed with Coffee & Conversation at Hessle Church, HU13 0RB at 10.30am – all welcome. From 12.30pm, the Archbishop will be walking along Hessle Road, calling in at the Halfway Hotel pub, Molly Malone’s and Raynor’s along the way getting to know people in the area.

At 3.30pm, the Archbishop will be speaking and taking part in a commissioning service for Laura Hadfield, a Children and Family Worker at St John the Baptist Church, St George’s Road. At 7.30pm St Martin’s Church, North Road, is hosting a ‘Pudding with a Quiz’ Night – all are welcome to join in.

On Sunday morning, the Archbishop is joining the Communion Service at 9.30am at St Martin’s Church, North Road – open to all. The final event of the mission weekend is at noon at St Andrew’s Quay, HU3 4SA for the Lost Trawlermen’s Service. This service provides an opportunity to remember those who daily risk their lives in order to bring food for our tables. During this service, the Archbishop will unveil and bless part of a long-awaited memorial. This memorial is to be erected on land next to The Sailmaker's pub, where the service will take place.

The mission in the Deanery of Hull West is the third in a series which will see the Archbishop go back on the road to join all 21 deaneries in the Diocese of York throughout 2017 and 2018.
