The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu and Bishop Alison White will begin their Advent preparations for Christmas in South Holderness as part of a jam-packed festive mission weekend.
The mission begins on Friday 1 December at 9.30am with Advent Prayers at Keyingham Church – all are welcome. The Archbishop will then visit Keyingham Primary School for a whole school assembly; South Holderness Technology College for Q & As with Philosophy & Ethics students; and in the afternoon be at Ingmans and Hedon Primary Schools for Q & As with Key Stage 2 pupils. Hedon British Legion Club is hosting an open question evening with the Archbishop at 7.30pm with the Mayor of Hedon, Steve Gallant in attendance.
A men’s breakfast begins at 9am in Preston Community Hall on Saturday morning and the ‘Who let the dads out?’ messy church activity follows at Ottringham Village Hall at 10.30am – dads and grandads with young family members are warmly welcome to attend. Halsham Waterside café is the place to meet with the Archbishop around lunchtime. At 2pm ‘The Big Mouse Hunt’ begins at St Matthews Church Withernsea at which the Archbishop will play his drums with the choir – join in the festive fun. At 6pm, the Archbishop will be switching on the Christmas Tree lights in Humbleton before he joins the Quiz Night at the George and Dragon Inn, Holmpton where he will give a short talk in between the question rounds.
Also on the Saturday, the Archdeacon of the East Riding – Andy Broom will be leading a men’s breakfast event at 9.30am in Thorngumbald at the Thornbirds Café. Bishop Alison will be out and about meeting people at the St Augustine’s Christmas Fair, Hedon.
Bishop Alison said: “This is going to be a great weekend. There are all kinds of places and events where we can meet up. My hope is that somewhere over the weekend you’ll find you have also been met by God”.
On the first Sunday of Advent (3 December) the Archbishop will preach at the Deanery Advent Service at Ottringham at 10.30am – all are welcome to attend. Later in the afternoon, Bishop Alison White will be visiting the craft fair at Burstwick Church Hall at 4pm at which the local school will be singing as well as the deanery choir.
This is the 15th weekend of mission to the Deaneries in the Diocese of York. The next mission will be in Selby from 8 to 10 December.
