Archbishop Sentamu will visit churches’ community projects in Hornsea and Bridlington on Friday 25th September. Accompanied by the Bishop of Hull, the Rt Revd Alison White and the Archdeacon of the East Riding, the Ven Andy Broom, Archbishop Sentamu will visit the Foodbank and Job Club at St Nicholas Hornsea and Community Services at Christ Church Bridlington.
St Nicholas in Hornsea was the first church in the Diocese of York to set up a Foodbank, and in May this year set up a Job Club to help people from the town receive coaching for interviews and help finding jobs online. At Christ Church Community Services, Archbishop Sentamu will meet volunteers and clients from many of the projects that the church runs, including youth and children’s work, the furniture store, and the Doorstep ministry for homeless people.
Archbishop Sentamu said, “At the centre of the Christian Gospel is God’s message to love our neighbour, and that’s exactly what these churches are doing. They have seen needs in their communities - whether it’s help finding jobs or help for people without a home – and responded in Christian love. This is why Christian churches need to be at the centre of their communities, so they can reach out and bless the people around them.”
After Archbishop Sentamu’s visit to Christ Church Community Services, he will remain in Bridlington for a weekend of mission with Holy Trinity Church.
On the Friday evening, people can meet Archbishop Sentamu at a Harvest Buffet at Holy Trinity church at 7pm. On Saturday morning, the Archbishop will be talking about his book Hope Stories at Holy Trinity from 10am to noon. Hope Stories tells the real life stories of 20 people, showing how their faith gave them hope in the darkest moments, whether they were facing terminal illness, drug addiction, depression and temptation to suicide. On Saturday afternoon the Archbishop will be talking at St. John's Church Hall, Sewerby, visiting the church’s Art Exhibition and afternoon tea. On Sunday, he will be preaching at the Holy Trinity church at 11am.
