BBC Radio York Christmas Countdown at Bishopthorpe Palace

BBC Radio York presenters Adam Tomlinson and Julia Lewis came to Bishopthorpe Palace this afternoon for their ‘Getting Ready For Christmas’ live outside broadcast.

As part of the programme, Archdeacon Sam Rushton and Richard Carew, the Archbishop’s domestic chaplain, spoke about the people they met and the places visited by the Archbishop during his six month Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing across the Diocese of York, which was from 1 December 2015 until 22 May 2016. Recordings made by BBC Radio York throughout the Pilgrimage were shared and the programme also celebrated some of the local food and drink producers across the region.

Sue Nelson, founder of Yorkshire Food Finder, prepared a number of affordable dishes in the Palace kitchen. Sue was joined by Steve Bannister from Bannister’s Farm Shop, James Glaves from Glaves Butchers, Jonathan Curtoys from Sloe Motion, Kyle Boote from Helmsley Brewing Company, and Phil Clayton from Haxby Bakehouse.

The afternoon was rounded off with singing from the Archbishop of York’s Junior School choir who sang ‘Silent Night’ in the Chapel. The Archbishop then joined them on the drums to the livelier beat of the Calypso Carol.

The Archbishop said, “I was delighted when BBC Radio York asked if they could come to Bishopthorpe to broadcast their afternoon show and to celebrate some of the fantastic Yorkshire produce I came across earlier this year on my Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness, and Blessing. Having lost my voice, I was unable to talk through my own signature dish of goat curry and challah bread. As many of us are thinking of what we shall eat and drink as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we have been able to hear from local producers and to be encouraged to buy local where we can. But we have also heard how those who may be feeling alone during this busy season are able to join others at Friendship Lunches and Community Cafes, so that the joy of fellowship at Christmas time can be shared with all. I must also thank the choir for their joyful singing - it was wonderful”.
