Sylvia Milner, environmental teaching assistant at Middleton on the Wolds CE Primary School, has won a East Riding Chairman’s Award. Last week, the 2014 East Riding Chairman’s Awards were announced at a ceremony at The Spa Bridlington, and Sylvia was winner in the environment category.

In her role as environmental teaching assistant at Middleton on the Wolds Primary School, Sylvia has transformed the school’s surroundings and widened the children’s knowledge of the environment.

She took over the wildlife garden, working with the pupils to turn it from an overgrown, inaccessible patch of land to a garden for the whole community. She helps the children to develop vegetable plots, grow fruit and plant flowers, bulbs and trees. They also record their activities in diaries, which raises their awareness of the environment and the changing seasons.

Sylvia has introduced composting to the school, involving the pupils in the process so that each classroom composts its food waste. She is a hard working role model who commits her own time for the benefit of the pupils, accompanying them to events such as the Environmental Conference.

Congratulations to Sylvia and all at Middleton on the Wolds CE Primary School!
