Howden Palm Sunday Celebrations

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu is leading Palm Sunday celebrations this weekend as part of his mission to the Howden Deanery from 7 to 9 April 2017.

The Archbishop said: “There is no greater thing than knowing Jesus as your personal friend and Saviour and I want to tell everyone I meet! This is my fifth mission weekend in the Diocese of York and it is also the start of Holy Week as we journey towards Easter Sunday. Easter is such a wonderful time to encounter the Risen Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit and it is never too late to follow him.”

On Friday morning, the Archbishop will be visiting St Anne’s School in Welton, before calling in at Melton Business Park, and later will visit Elloughton School. At 2pm, the Archbishop will be preaching and blessing the new porch during Newbald School’s end of term Easter Service at St Nicholas Church in North Newbald – all are welcome to attend. After refreshments at Drewton’s Farm Shop in South Cave from 4.45pm, the Archbishop will be joining The Cookery Club at St Nicholas Church for a Q&A session before sampling their cooking first hand.

The Revd Mike Bushby said, “The Cookery Club is a weekly session run by the Young People's Project in North Newbald. The group serves the community by cooking and serving food to various people within the village. We are all looking forward to welcoming the Archbishop for him to taste and see for himself what goes on here.”

On Saturday the Archbishop will be at the Farmer’s Market at South Cave Primary School from 9-11am where he will be signing books and talking to customers about his faith. From 2pm, he will be at Mires Beck Nursery, chatting to staff, volunteers and customers, and there will be a talk about plants found in the bible. There is a ‘Big Quiz’ at 7.30pm in Newport Village Hall where the Archbishop will also give a talk and take questions from the floor.

Mary Binns, Churchwarden at All Saints South Cave said, “'The Farmers Market began some 16 years ago under the auspices of the Parish Council of South Cave. However for the last three years it has been run as a cooperative by the Traders themselves. It takes place on the second Saturday of every month on the School Playground and on Saturday 8th April we are very honoured to have the Archbishop of York with us. There will be all the usual stalls there, butchery, fruit & vegetables, pies, fish cakes and bacon sandwiches etc. So do come along and enjoy meeting our very special guest.”

Palm Sunday begins at All Saints, South Cave with a BCP Eucharist Service at 8am, then two school choirs are to take part in All Age Deanery worship at St Stephen’s Church in Newport at 11am – everyone is welcome to join. There will be a picnic lunch in the Shire Hall in Howden from 1pm followed by worship for all ages in Howden Minster at 3pm where a donkey is to lead the procession for Palm Sunday celebrations. Everyone is encouraged to come along.
