Old churches need a bit of care, so the congregation of St Mary’s Askham Richard are knitting a scarf to wrap around their church. On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January, St Mary’s Askham Richard will be holding a sponsored knit-a-thon, knitting a scarf long enough to wrap around the church.

The money raised by the knit-a-thon will go partly towards restoring the church’s roof, and partly to Water Aid.

Sue Elgie, churchwarden of St Mary’s Askham Richard said, “We need to raise £70,000 to restore the roof, to keep our church able to serve the community for future generations. We’d like to invite anyone who loves knitting, or who fancies learning, to our knit-a-thon Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January. Even if you’ve only got an hour to spare, come along and knit a few rows.

“We also wanted to support Water Aid with the knit-a-thon. We’ve got too much water threatening to come through the church roof, but millions of people across the world don’t have access to safe, clean water. We hope that the knit-a-thon will raise lots of money to not only help St Mary’s, but also those people in need.”

The knit-a-thon will be held in the church hall from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January. Tea, coffee and cake will be available all day, along with a cake stall, raffle and ‘guess the distance around the church’ competition.
