The congregation of St Mary’s Askham Richard held a sponsored knit-a-thon to raise money for their church, and ended up knitting a scarf long enough to go round the church twice!

The knit-a-thon, which took place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January, raised money to go partly towards restoring the church’s roof, and partly to Water Aid.

Sue Elgie, churchwarden of St Mary’s Askham Richard said, “The weekend was a great success - we knitted a scarf, not only long enough to go round the church once, but twice! To say I was thrilled was somewhat of an understatement. We haven't got the exact figure raised yet, but we are very close to having raised £700, so a wonderful amount.

"More than the amount of money raised, which was fantastic, was the wonderful social event it turned out to be. People turned up from all over and also people from our own village who we had not seen at fundraising events before. New friendships were made and great conversations were had, at one point things turned into a book club with people discussing their favourite books.

"Roy our vicar came on Saturday morning and helped with the knitting and on Sunday afternoon Bishop John joined us. He did some knitting, with needles clicking away at the speed of light, and helped us wrap the church in the scarf. The weekend has made me think a Parish knitting group might be our next project!"

Congratulations to all at St Mary’s Askham Richard!
