Roos CE VC Primary School is among the top 5% of all primary schools in the country for its phonics results. Nick Gibb MP, Minster of State for School Reform, has written to Marlene Miller, Headteacher of Roos CE VC Primary School, to congratulate the school on the results.

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing by helping children hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes – the sounds that make up words – to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them.

In his letter Mr Gibb said, “We want to ensure that every child develops a firm grasp of phonics which is why I was delighted to see your results. With at least 95% of pupils at Roos CE VC Primary School reaching or exceeding the pass mark in your check, your school is in the top 5% of all primary schools in the country.

“I am pleased to learn that you have ensured that your Year 1 children have a firm foundation in reading, from which they can develop further and becoming increasingly fluent readers.”

Marlene Miller, Headteacher of Roos CE VC Primary School, said, “We were all excited to receive Mr Gibb’s letter, and discover how good our Year 1 children are at phonics. This result is a tribute to the teachers’ hard work and dedication, and our Year 1 students’ love of learning.”
