The congregation of St John the Baptist church, Stamford Bridge, will be joining in the Derwent Dash – without running a mile. The church will be holding an outdoor service as runners tackle the 10K of the Derwent Dash on Sunday 17th May, and cheering on the runners.

The Revd Fran Wakefield, Rector of St John the Baptist said, “It began as a clash of village events – we were going to hold an outdoor service with the Bishop of Selby, and we discovered the village fun run was scheduled at the same time in the same place! So I met up with the Derwent Dash organiser Jessica Fox, and we worked out that we would have a much bigger event by combining them.

So, the race will be started by the Bishop of Selby, the Rt Revd Dr John Thomson, and the runners will cover 10K around Stamford Bridge and the Cattons. Once the race has set off, we'll hold a short open-air service, including a short walk to the Viaduct where we will pray for all our villages. We’ll be there ready to cheer as the first runners sprint past us on the way to the finishing line. There’s a nature activity trail for children, and we’ll all enjoy brunch at the Station Club.

“I wish everyone who’s taking part in the Dash the best of luck – they’re all raising money for Stamford Bridge Primary School. Our motto is 'St John the Baptist Stamford Bridge - a church at the heart of our community', and that’s what this day will be all about – people coming together to love and serve their community.”
