This week the Archbishop of York Youth Trust launches a “Heroes in our Schools” initiative. In a time of immense change within the world of education, the Youth Trust hopes to raise the spotlight on teachers; encouraging them in the vital role they play serving and supporting young people today.

Launching the programme, the Youth Trust team will visit six local Primary Schools to present teachers, as nominated by the students, with “Teacher Survival Kits”. Each kit will include everything a teacher would need to “take a break” such as tea, coffee, biscuits and encouraging messages. With thanks to York Coffee Emporium, Lush and Taylors of Harrogate for donating contents.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said; “Having visited 148 schools on my Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing recently, I am greatly encouraged by the wonderful learning that is taking place in our schools. Teachers play a vital role in opening up children’s hearts and minds to our world, whilst at the same time treating them as unique individuals who have the potential to grow and change our world for the better. I salute all teachers, they are definitely heroes in our schools, and I would like them to know that they are in my thoughts and prayers as they continue to serve and inspire the next generation”.

Kate Denney, Primary Schools Coordinator for the Youth Trust said; “We work with over 350 schools across the North of England and are continually amazed by the wonderful role teachers play inspiring and supporting children and young people. Our experience has shown us that teachers are incredibly passionate, conscientious and hardworking professionals who care deeply about their work. With the challenges facing the sector in recruiting and retaining teaching staff, morale within the profession is at a low point. In light of this, we hope this campaign will show teachers how much they are appreciated, in turn encouraging them in the essential role they play in our communities.”
