The Revd Ian Kitchen, the vicar of St Michael’s, Sutton on Derwent, will be sleeping out in the churchyard to raise money for an extension to that churchyard.

Ian will be sleeping under the stars on the night of Sunday 24th January from 10pm to 7am, to raise money to buy a strip of land alongside the existing churchyard.

Ian said, “Our existing churchyard is nearly full, and we have the opportunity to buy a strip of land alongside, where we could extend the churchyard. Some people have already generously given money to help with this, but we still need another £2,000 to make this happen. It’s really important in a rural community that the churchyard keeps going, especially as there's so much family history and community cohesion bound up with it.

“I've only ever slept out once before, about 30 years ago, and in the summertime. A January night will be quite different! But I'm looking forward to this - it's good to have a change and with a bit of luck there will be good stars and a sunrise to watch.”
