Over the years, John and Nancy Eckersley, seasoned walkers for Christian Aid and now retired in Flamborough, have walked all round the English and Welsh coasts. Nancy has always had a dream completing all of the Scottish coast and this summer, they’re taking five weeks to do 250 miles or so between Dundee (on the Firth of Tay) round to Inverness (on the Moray Firth), hence the title 'Firth to Firth'. If they complete this, it will mean that they'll have done all the east coast of Scotland.

The Christian Aid project that they are supporting is in Ethiopia. John and Nancy are hoping to raise £1,000 on the journey but the EU is match-funding the programme 5:1 so if they collect £1,000 the EU will release an additional £5,000. The project is described as 'increasing access to reproductive health information and services to vulnerable women in three areas in the south of Ethiopia'. Every year 20,000 women die in Ethiopia from complications in pregnancy (the figure for the UK is 40 deaths per year) so education about, and access to, birth control measures is a high priority and one specific aim is to halve the teenage pregnancy rate to 5%.
