A sponsored walk by pupils from a primary school near Pocklington has raised thousands of pounds for charity. Children from Warter CE Primary School raised a staggering £2345.95, half of which is going to Save the Children’s Syria Appeal. The government will match fund the donation to Save the Children, therefore the school will have raised £2,370.96 for the Syrian Appeal. The children aged between 4 and 11 years walked the first section of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, a national trail which runs from Hull to Filey.

Headteacher Alison Metcalfe, was said to be delighted by the result. “The pupils really enjoyed the challenge of walking the route. It has been so successful the school is planning to do the second section of the route next year.” Miss Metcalfe added that she hoped it would become an annual event in the school calendar and that by year 6 pupils will have completed each section of the 79 mile long route.

Malcolm Hodgson who manages the Yorkshire Wolds Way National route said “It was fantastic to see all the children enjoying and hopefully being inspired by walking on the National Trail. There were plenty of inquisitive minds in evidence, as we strolled through the beautiful and historic farmed landscape of the Yorkshire Wolds”

Local representative of Save the Children, Janet Laverick, was presented with a cheque for the Syria Appeal following a worship about the plight of children in Syria. She said “This has been a wonderful effort by the School Community and the pupils have shown their concern for and desire to help thousands of suffering children in Syria”. The remainder of the funds will go to the Friends of Warter, a charity set up by school parents to buy equipment for the school.
