The Revd Susan Binks, Curate of Kirkdale with Harome, Nunnington and Pockley, is to be Vicar of the same Benefice. She will be instituted by the Bishop of Whitby in St Gregory's Minster, Kirkdale at 2.30pm on Sunday, 3rd June 2018.

The Revd Richard Brown, Curate of Grangetown, resigned with effect from 6th April 2018 to be Priest in Charge of Marsh Farm (Holy Cross) in the Diocese of St Albans.

The Revd Ian Fox, previously Canon of York, Prebend of Knaresborough, relinquished his canonry on 15th March 2018. The Archbishop conferred the title of Canon Emeritus upon Mr Fox on 20th March 2018.

The Revd Jonathan Hill, Curate of Fletchamstead in the Diocese of Coventry, is to be Vicar of Hull, St Martin with the Transfiguration. He will be collated by the Bishop of Hull in the Church of St Martin with the Transfiguration on Tuesday, 12th June 2018 at 7.30pm.

The Revd Geoffrey Hollingsworth, Vicar of Pocklington Wold and Londesborough Wold, will retire on the 30 April 2018.

The Revd Graham Horner, Vicar of Great Wyrley in the Diocese of Lichfield, is to be Vicar of Riccall, Barlby and Hemingbrough with Cliffe. He will be collated by the Bishop of Selby in St Mary’s, Hemingbrough on Wednesday, 16th May 2018.

The Revd Helen Rawlings, Deacon, Curate of the Benefice of Brighton (Good Shepherd) Preston in the Diocese of Chichester, is to be Assistant Curate (House for Duty Deacon) of the Benefices of Helmsley and Upper Ryedale. She will be Licensed by the Bishop of Whitby at 7.00pm on Wednesday, 4th July in St Michael's, Cold Kirby.

The Revd Linda Robinson, Curate of Newington with St Andrew’s Hull, resigned on 31st March 2018.

The Archbishop has re-appointed the Revd Tim Robinson as Area Dean of Northern Ryedale for a further period of five years with effect from 29th April 2018. He will be recommissioned by the Bishop of Whitby on Sunday, 29th April at 6.00pm during Choral Evensong in All Saints, Helmsley.

The Revd Barbara Ryan resigned on the 8th April as Curate of Bilton in Holderness. She is to be Associate Priest (House for Duty) of the Parishes of Spofforth with Kirk Deighton, including Follifoot and Little Ribston in the Diocese of Leeds. She will be licensed on Sunday, 22nd April 2018 at 10.30am in the Parish Church of All Saints, Spofforth.

The Revd Fran Wakefield, Rector of the Stamford Bridge Group of Parishes, has resigned with effect from Thursday, 14th June 2018 to be Priest in Charge of the Benefice of York St Hilda. Her final service in the Stamford Bridge Group will be on Sunday 20th May 2018, and she will be collated in Tang Hall by the Archbishop of York at 7.30pm on Thursday, 14th June in St Hilda's Church.

+ With regret we report the death on the 25th March 2018 of Tony Hunt, Reader in the York City Centre group of parishes, at the age of 93. He is thought to have been the oldest serving Reader in the Diocese.


March 2018

The Archbishop has re-appointed the Revd Timothy Robinson as Area Dean of Northern Ryedale for a further period of five years with effect from 29th April 2018. Mr Robinson will be recommissioned by the Bishop of Whitby on Sunday, 29th April at 6pm during the service of Choral Evensong in the Parish Church of All Saints, Helmsley.

Mr Houghton will mark the 35th anniversary of his ordination as a priest at a Eucharistic service on Friday, 29th June 2018 at 7pm in the Parish Church of St Mary, Leake. The date of his final service will will be Sunday, 1st July 2018 at 10.45am in the Parish Church of St Peter, Osmotherley.

The Revd James Anderson (Priest in Charge (HfD) of The Beacon Benefice) is to be re-licensed as Priest in Charge (HfD) of The Beacon Benefice for a further two years. Mr Anderson will be re-licensed by the Bishop of Hull on Sunday, 6th May 2018 at 6pm in the Parish Church of St Martin, Lowthorpe.

The Revd John Hanks (Distinctive Deacon with PTO in the Diocese of York) has been appointed as Assistant Curate (SSM) of the Benefice of York All Saints, North Street. Mr Hanks will be licensed by the Archbishop of York at Diocesan Synod on Saturday, 17th March 2018 at 9.30am in Manor School.

The Revd Canon Catherine Goulder (Assistant to the Diocesan Vocations Adviser and holder of PTO in the Diocese of York) is to be re-licensed as Assistant to the Diocesan Vocations Adviser. Mrs Goulder will be licensed by the Bishop of Hull in a private ceremony at Hullen House on Friday, 13 April 2018 at 10am.

The Revd Philip West (Assistant Curate (SSM) to all the Benefices of the Deanery of South Holderness) is to be re-licensed for a further two years. Mr West will be re-licensed by the Bishop of Hull in a private ceremony at Hullen House on Wednesday, 21 March 2018 at 2.30pm.

Sister Kate Wiley CA (Evangelism Co-ordinator) will retire with effect from 30th April 2018. The date of her final service will be Sunday, 8th April 2018.

The Revd Canon Erik Wilson, Canon of York, Prebend of Fenton, relinquished his canonry on 13th February 2018. The Archbishop has conferred the title of Canon Emeritus upon Mr Wilson on 27th February 2018.

Further to the Archbishop of York’s invitation for Readers to consider a vocation to the Diaconal Ministry and the subsequent discernment process, the following people will be ordained as Deacon by the Archbishop of York in the Parish Church of St Matthew, Hutton Buscel on Wednesday, 11th April 2018 at 7pm.


February 2018

The Revd Anna Burr (Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Haddlesey with Hambleton and Birkin) has been appointed additionally as Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Carlton and Drax. Mrs Burr will be licensed by the Bishop of Selby in the Parish Church of St Mary, Carlton on Thursday, 26 April 2018 at 7.30pm.

The Revd Anne Freestone (Chaplain to Castle Howard), has resigned with effect from 31 March 2018.

The Revd Linda Munt (PTO in the Diocese of York) has been appointed as Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Garrowby Hill. Mrs Munt will be licensed by the Bishop of Selby in the Parish Church of St Andrew’s, Bugthorpe on Monday, 16th April 2018 at 6.30pm.

The Revd Michael Bushby (Priest in Charge (House for Duty) of the Benefice of Newbald) is to be re-licensed as Priest in Charge (House for Duty) of the Benefice of Newbald for a two year period. Mr Bushby will be re-licensed for two years by the Bishop of Hull at 3pm on Tuesday, 27 March 2018 at Hullen House.

The Revd Pauline Percy (Assistant Curate of the Benefice of Rudby in Cleveland with Middleton, Kirklevington with Picton, and High and Low Worsall) has been appointed as Assistant Curate (House for Duty) of the Benefice of Sowerby, Sessay and Thirkleby with Kilburn and Bagby. Mrs Percy will be licensed by the Bishop of Whitby in the Parish Church of St Oswald, Sowerby at 3pm on Sunday, 10th June 2018. Mrs Percy will retain her post as Voluntary Chaplain to North Yorkshire Police.

The Revd Richard Carew (Domestic Chaplain to the Archbishop of York) has been appointed as Vicar of the Benefice of Dringhouses. Mr Carew will be collated by the Archbishop of York in the Parish Church of St Edward’s, Dringhouses, on Thursday, 7th June 2018 at 7.30pm.

The Revd Andrew Gready, Chaplain to The Hague, St Philip and St John has been appointed as Vicar of the Benefice of Clifton. Mr Gready will be instituted by the Archbishop of York in Clifton Parish Church at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 2nd May 2018.

It is with regret that we have to inform you that the Revd Norman Lewis, who had the Archbishop’s Permission to Officiate died on Monday 2nd February 2018. Mr Lewis was 84 is survived by his wife Miriam.

The Revd Tessa Stephens, Associate Minister of the Benefice of Linthorpe and Chaplain to Teesside University has been appointed as Vicar of the Benefice of Nunthorpe. Mrs Stephens will be licensed by the Bishop of Whitby in the Parish Church of St Mary’s, Nunthorpe at 3pm on Sunday, 8th April 2018.

The Archbishop has appointed the Revd John Cowan, Vicar of Hull St Cuthbert, to be Area Dean of Hull for five years from 1 January 2018 in addition to his existing responsibilities as Vicar of Hull St Cuthbert, Chaplain of the University of Hull, and Associate Dean of Hull Central and North.

The Revd Martin Otter, Curate of Aberford with Micklefield and of Sherburn-in-Elmet with Saxton, has been appointed as Vicar (half-time) of the Benefice of Marston Moor. This is in addition to his appointment as Chaplain to Stockton Hall. He will be instituted by the Bishop of Selby on Monday, 5 March 2018 at 7.30pm at All Saints, Rufforth.

The Revd Angela Schrimshaw has resigned as Anglican Chaplain to HM Prison Humber with effect from 28 February 2018.


January 2018

The Revd Audrey Atkinson, Chaplain at HMP Full Sutton, retired on Sunday, 26th November 2017.

The Revd Timothy Boyns relinquished his role as Area Dean of Hull on Monday, 1 January 2018. He remains Vicar of Hessle. The Revd Harry Hopkins, Vicar of North Thornaby, will retire with effect from 31st January 2018. His final service will be on Sunday, 28th January 2018 in the Parish Church of St Paul, North Thornaby.

The Revd Jane Penn, Honorary Associate Priest of St John Lee and Warden with Newbrough in the Diocese of Newcastle, is to be Priest-in-Charge (House for Duty) of Bempton with Flamborough, Reighton with Speighton (known as the Headlands Benefice). She will be licensed by the Bishop of Hull in the Church of St Oswald, Flamborough on Wednesday, 24 January.

The Revd Sarah Strand, Assistant Curate of Coatham and Dormanstown, has resigned with effect from 30th January 2018. Her final service will be Sunday, 21st January 2018. Mrs Strand will retain her role as part-time tutor at Cranmer Hall, Durham.

The Revd Canon Erik Wilson, Vicar of St Barnabas, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, will retire on Tuesday, 13th February 2018. His final service will be Sunday, 11th February 2017 at St Barnabas.

The Revd Greg Downes, Associate Minister of St Michael-leBelfrey, York, has resigned to be Director of Ministerial Training at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford with effect from 31 December 2017.

Sr Celia Hare (Church Army), Parish Evangelist at Emmanuel Bridlington, has been appointed as Family and Youth Worker in the Benefices of Newby, and Cloughton and Burniston. (north Scarborough). She will be Licensed by the Bishop of Hull at 10.30am on Friday, 5 January2018 at Hullen House.

The Revd Mary Hollis, Curate of Scarborough St James with Holy Trinity, has been re-appointed as Assistant Curate, SSM, of the Benefice of Scarborough, St James with Holy Trinity. She will be Licensed by the Bishop of Hull at 9.00am on Thursday, 21 December at Hullen House.

The Revd Daphne Kitching, Curate of Swanland, Hull, resigned with effect from Thursday, 2 November 2017.

The Revd Ruth Newton, Curate of Walkington, Bishop Burton, Rowley and Skidby, has been reappointed as Assistant Curate SSM of the Benefice of Walkington, Bishop Burton, Rowley and Skidby. She will be licensed by the Bishop of Hull at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 17 January 2018 at Hullen House.

The Revd John Tallant, who holds the Archbishop’s Permission to Officiate, has been appointed as Priest-in-Charge (House for Duty) at Hull, St Mary Lowgate. He will be licensed by the Bishop of Hull inSt Mary Lowgate at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 16 January 2018.

The Revd Robin Waite, Curate of the Benefice of Woldsburn, retired on the 10 November 2017.

The Revd Matthew Woodcock, Associate Minister of Hull Minster and Hull Deanery Mission Enabler, has been appointed as a Diocesan Mission Enabler with effect from 1 January 2018. He will be licensed by the Archbishop of York at the Archbishop’s Leadership Team Eucharist at Bishopthorpe Palace at 8.30am on Thursday, 11th January 2018.

Mr Jake Belder will be ordained as Deacon by the Archbishop of York at 10am on Sunday, 14January 2018 in Selby Abbey. Mr Belder has recently completed a PhD and will serve as Curatein the benefice of Selby St Mary.

The Archbishop has appointed the Rt Revd Frank White and the Rt Revd David Wilbourne to serve as Honorary Assistant Bishops in the Diocese of York.


November 2017

The Revd Stephen Foster, who holds Permission to Officiate in the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, has been appointed as Chaplain to the Order of the Holy Paraclete, Whitby. He was licensed by the Archbishop on Friday, 3 November.

The Revd Lynn Hellmuth, Vicar of Stoneleigh in the Diocese of Guildford, is to be Vicar of Hackness with Harwood Dale, Ravenscar and Staintondale, Scalby, and Scarborough, St Luke. She will be collated by the Bishop of Hull at St Laurence, Scalby at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 13 February 2018.

The Revd Malcolm Jackson, Associate Priest and Missioner in the Benefice of Whitby with Ruswarp, is to be Priest-in-Charge of Hinderwell, Roxby and Staithes with Lythe, Ugthorpe and Sandsend. He will be licensed by the Bishop of Whitby at St Oswald, Lythe at 3.00pm on Sunday, 7 January 2018.

The Revd Peter Robinson, Vicar of Malton and Old Malton, will retire with effect from Monday, 30 April 2018. His final service will be Sunday, 29 April 2018 at 10.30am at St Michael’s, Malton.


The Revd Janice Sharp has resigned as Senior Chaplain for the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust with effect from 31st October 2017. She will continue her ministry as Honorary Curate for the Benefice of Easington with Skeffling, Keyingham, Ottringham, Patrington, Welwick and Winestead.

The Revd Christina Minett Stevens, Curate of Scarborough, St Mary, has been appointed as Vicar of Hornsea, Atwick and Skipsea. She will be instituted by the Bishop of Hull at St Nicholas, Hornsea on Tuesday, 19 December 2017 at 7.30pm.

With regret we record the death of the Revd Eric Norris, who had the Archbishop’s Permission to Officiate, at the age of 74 on the 31 October 2017.

YORK MINSTER – CANONS EMERITI: The Revd David Casswell, Canon of York, Prebend of Ulleskelf, relinquished his canonry on 12th August 2017. The Revd Martin Baldock, Canon of York, Prebend of Strensall, relinquished his canonry on 31st August 2017. The Revd David Purdy, Canon of York, Prebend of Langtoft, relinquished his canonry on 7th October 2017. The Archbishop conferred the title of Canon Emeritus upon both Mr Casswell and Mr Baldock on 4th September and upon Mr Purdy on 10th October.

The Revd Gareth Atha, Curate of Beverley Minster, has resigned with effect from 28 November 2017 to be Vicar of the Elloe Stone parishes in the Diocese of Lincoln. His last service will be on Sunday, 12 November 2017.

The Revd Captain Robert Barker, Associate Minister of Ellesmere Port and Leader of the Church Army Centre of Mission in the Diocese of Chester, is to be Priest in Charge of Kirby Misperton with Normanby and Salton and of Middleton, Newton and Sinnington. He will be licensed by the Bishop of Whitby at St Laurence, Kirby Misperton on Sunday, 29 October 2017 at 3.00pm.

The Revd Andrew de Smet has resigned as Priest in Charge of Kirkdale with Harome, Nunnington and Pockley, with effect from 19 October 2017, to be full time Archbishop’s Adviser and Co-ordinator of Pastoral Care with effect from 20 October 2017.

The Revd Canon Derek Earis, formerly Assistant Curate of York St Olave with St Giles, of York St Denys, of York St Helen Stonegate with St Martin Coney Street and of York All Saints Pavement with St Crux and St Michael Spurriergate, will be re-Licensed as half-time Assistant Curate in the same Benefices by the Archbishop of York on Tuesday, 17th October 2017 at 9.30am at Bishopthorpe Palace. The Revd Michael Gobbett, Team Rector of Whitby with Ruswarp, has additionally been appointed Area Dean of Whitby by the Archbishop for a period of five years. He will be Commissioned by the Archbishop at Bishopthorpe Palace on Tuesday, 17 October 2017 during the meeting of the Archbishop’s Leadership Team with the Area Deans.

The Revd Jonathan Juckes, Rector of Kirk Ella and Willerby, has resigned with effect from Sunday, 31 December 2017. He has been appointed President of Oak Hill Theological College and will take up his new position in January 2018. His final services will be Sunday, 5 November 2017 in the parish church of Kirk Ella, St Andrew in the morning and Willerby, St Luke in the evening.

The Revd David Messer, Rector of Stanton, Hopton, Market Weston, Barningham and Coney Weston, and Priest in Charge of Hepworth, Hinderclay and Thelnetham in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, has been appointed Vicar of the Benefice of Walkington, Bishop Burton, Rowley and Skidby. The Revd Taff Morgan, Rector of The Howardian Group and Chaplain to North Yorkshire Police, will retire with effect from Thursday, 12 April 2018. His final service will be at 10.00am on Sunday, 8 April 2018 in All Saints, Terrington.

The Revd Julie Smith, Assistant Curate of Saltburn by the Sea, has resigned to be Vicar of Barrowford (St Thomas) and Newchurch-inPendle in the Diocese of Blackburn with effect from 25 October 2017. Her final service was on the 8 October 2017 in the Parish Church of New Marske, St Thomas.

The Archbishop has appointed the Revd Canon Rodney Nicholson, who holds the Archbishop’s Permission to Officiate, to be Interim Area Dean of South Wold. He will be Commissioned by the Bishop of Selby at Wydale Hall at 9.30am on Wednesday, 25 October 2017.

The Revd Linda Shipp, Vicar of Whorlton with Carlton and Faceby, will retire with effect from 16 October 2017. Her final service was on Sunday, 3 September 2017 in Holy Cross, Swainby.

The Revd Graham Thornalley has resigned as Team Vicar in the Howden Team Ministry with effect from Tuesday, 14 November 2017 to be Vicar of Kingston Upon Hull, St Alban. His final service in the Howden Team will be on Sunday 29 October. He will be collated by the Bishop of Hull at St Alban’s Church at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 15 November 2017.

The Revd Rachel Wilson has retired as Assistant Curate of Pocklington Wold and of Londesborough Wold following her final service on Sunday 1 October at All Saints, Pocklington.
