Prayer
Prayer is how we communicate with God. We can pray to God to give thanks, ask for help for ourselves or others, or to ask forgiveness for what we have done wrong in our lives. Prayer can be offered to God when you are on your own, or with groups of people. You don’t have to pray at any particular time, or in any particular manner – you don’t have to kneel, or clasp your hands together.
When his disciples asked Jesus how they should pray, he taught them the Lord’s Prayer, and it’s a good place for anyone to start praying:
Our
Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen
Christians pray together in every service in the Church of England. The Church of England has a regular pattern of services for each day of the year, and these include the services of Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer and Night Prayer. You can find the words (liturgy) for these services for today, tomorrow and yesterday on this site, to help you find time for God during your day here.
As a Diocese, we pray for each other every day - for churches, groups and specific people. You can download our monthly Prayer Calendar at the bottom of this page.
