Anna's work explores and reveals many of the realities about attendance patterns and financial circumstances of churches across the Diocese. She plays a vital part in placing planning and decision-making on a firm and realistic footing, and co-ordinates the collection of data to enable this through the Parish Returns and Statistics for Mission processes each year.

Archdeacon of Cleveland
Amanda became Archdeacon of Cleveland in 2020, having served as Priest in Charge of Holy Trinity Bembridge, on the Isle of Wight, and Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Portsmouth.
The Venerable Andy Broom
Archdeacon of the East Riding
Andy was born in Norwich and studied Geography and Politics at Keele University. He was a youth worker for three years before training for ordination at Trinity College, Bristol. He served his curacy at All Saints Wellington in Telford and then became Curate in Charge of St John's Walton within the parish of St Thomas Brampton in Chesterfield. He became Vicar of St John's when a new parish was created in 2000 and in 2009 became Director of Mission and Ministry in Derby Diocese.

The Revd Anna Burr
Co-ordinator of the Vocations Adviser Network
Anna co-ordinates the diocesan team of Vocations Advisors who support people wishing to explore God’s call on their life. This could be to a wide range of ministry, both lay and ordained. Our advisors are a mix of women and men, lay and ordained and those who are living out their vocation in the religious life.
Warden of Lay Ministry and Director of Lifelong Learning
Lynn has worked in theological education for many years, including as Principal of York School of Ministry and York Diocesan Director of Reader Training, both of which remain within her wider role as Diocesan Director of Lifelong Learning. She has served as a Reader herself at St Luke's Church in York since the 1990s.
Secretary to the Diocesan Advisory Committee
Catherine is the first point of contact for parishes wishing to undertake repairs or improvements to their church buildings and churchyards. She works with colleagues to administer the Care of Churches and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Measure and the Faculty Jurisdiction Rules and provides advice and support to the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC). She can advise PCCs whether the works they plan to carry out will need Faculty permission and will guide them through the application process.
The Revd Canon Mandy Coutts
Start of Ordained Ministries Adviser
Mandy oversees the formation of those starting ordained ministry from the beginning through to the early stages of a post of responsibility. She brings with her skills and experience as a teacher and adult educator, rich ministerial and pastoral expertise along with a commitment to the wellbeing of those in ministry.
Assistant Diocesan Secretary
Shirley Davies is the Assistant Diocesan Secretary and Secretary to the Mission and Pastoral sub committee. Her work falls into three main areas: Pastoral re-organisation and Patronage matters, Closed Churches, Synodical matters including elections, and the Church Representation Rules.

The Revd Andrew De Smet
Archbishop's Co-ordinator and Adviser in Pastoral Care
Andrew is the Archbishop's Co-ordinator and Adviser in Pastoral Care; he can offer or arrange counselling, spiritual direction, pastoral support or mediation for clergy, their immediate families and Diocesan employees, and provide some support to Readers.
He also does some training work in these areas.
Lou joined the Diocesan Communications team in 2022; she is a church member at St Chad's in York.
Senior Glebe, Property and Trusts Officer
Bevil is the Senior Glebe, Property and Trust Officer, and is able to advise PCCs about trustee matters, especially where the DBF acts as custodian trustees, charitable and building related trusts and title deeds.
Dr Carolyn Edwards
Diocesan Children's and Young People's Adviser
Carolyn was appointed to the new role of Children and Young People’s Adviser for the Diocese late in 2018.
She has many years experience in ministry with children and young people and previously the Programme Lead for the Mission and Ministry degree courses at Cliff College near Sheffield, having previously worked with Oxford CYM training students in youth and children’s ministry.
The Rt Revd Paul Ferguson
Bishop of Whitby
Born and brought up in Birkenhead, Paul served as curate at St Mary’s, Handbridge, Chester. He went on to Westminster Abbey, where he served firstly as Chaplain and then Precentor. In 1995 he came to York Minster as Precentor and Residentiary Canon, and in 2001 was appointed Archdeacon of Cleveland. He was consecrated as Bishop of Whitby in June 2014.
Associate Team Leader, Multiply
Jennifer works with Multiply Team Leader the Revd John Lee to oversee the ‘Growth Fund’ making grants possible across the Diocese to enable lay people to lead the creation of New Worshipping Communities focused on those in their 20s-40s. Jennifer has wide experience of launching and supporting new missional initiatives. She was leader of Youth with a Mission in York for several years before moving to Sheffield, where she planted a church with her husband.
Deputy Director of Education
Claire is responsible for governance in schools and academies including recruitment of governors and improving the effectiveness of governing bodies. She provides advice on governance structures and the roles and responsibilities of governors and deals with admissions in voluntary aided schools. She oversees the development of service under our Service Level Agreement. Claire also provides advice to governors on academy and collaborative frameworks.
Digital Transformation Leader
Jonny works with diocesan colleagues to ensure that we are making best use of the available technology, helping to build confidence and capability in using the most effective platforms and tools to enable smart working, and equipping them to ensure that digital communications are of the highest quality. He also works with church leaders and others to ensure parishes can navigate the transition to a hybrid way of working where they can embrace the digital world as well the everyday in-person presence in our communities.
Mustard Seed Associate Programme Leader
Liz is one of the people leading Stepping Up, the first step for a parish to be involved with the Mustard Seed Programme. Liz is working in Scarborough and Hull, developing Stepping Up programmes, which will begin in 2021. Local people from several parishes coming together once a week to grow as disciples of Jesus. They will be exploring what mission looks like in their parish and supporting each other to Step Up into what God is calling them to do in local mission.
Asset Surveyor, Housing
David has day-to-day responsibility for all our programmes of work, particularly while clergy posts are in vacancy, and in support of the five-yearly (quinquennial) inspections and our overall asset management.
Programme Administrator, Multiply and Mustard Seed
Alice provides programme support and administration across both Mustard Seed and Multiply. Her previous experience has been in university administration, working in student admissions and student recruitment with the universities of Leeds and York.
Alice usually works full-time from Monday to Wednesday, and on Thursday mornings.
Assistant Manager - Wydale Hall
Helen handles finance and masterminds the Wydale programme of events each year. Previously, Helen ran her own training and development business until 2015 when she moved to the country.
The Revd John Lee
Team Leader, Multiply
John is responsible for day-to-day oversight of the work of building New Worshipping Communities focused on 20s-40s, and leads a team of 14 full-time 20s – 40s Ministers, placed strategically across the Diocese of York. He was Rector of St Paul's, Holgate Rd, York from 2002 to the end of 2018 (with additional oversight of St Barnabas in his final year), and became Area Dean of York - in effect the convenor of all the Church of England clergy in the City of York.
Generous Giving Officer (resourcing giving)
Phil is our Diocesan Generous Giving Officer (resourcing giving) supporting and advising parishes in encouraging giving through mechanisms such as contactless giving, QR codes, and The Parish Giving Scheme.
Executive Assistant to the Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive
Kirsty is the first point of contact for anyone contacting the Diocesan Secretary, and works to ensure the effective operational running of the Diocesan Secretary’s office.

Rob joined the Diocese of York after working in a safeguarding role within a school, following 14 years with South Yorkshire Police.

The Revd Canon Dr Ian McIntosh
Director of Mission and Ministry
Ian leads the Mission & Ministry Team that embraces the work of York School of Ministry, the Diocesan Vocations Network and the Training Team with that of the Multiply and Mustard Seed programmes. He has responsibility for shaping and directing support for mission and ministry across the whole diocese.
Assistant Director of Education
Yvonne has primary responsibility for church school improvement and supports the DBE in securing the effectiveness of its schools and academies. She monitors and reports on a range of performance data and liaises with Local Authorities, Multi Academy Trusts, the DfE and Ofsted, attending feedback meetings and monitoring visits as appropriate. She also supports schools in the development, monitoring and evaluation of their Christian vision, Religious Education and collective worship and their preparation for SIAMS. She delivers support to schools through our Service Level Agreement and is the link adviser for a number of schools.
Director for Strategic Transformation
Sam is taking forward the work done so far in developing the vision of ‘Living Christ’s Story’, working collaboratively to ensure that the consequent transformation programme is set up for success and delivers its strategic goals.
Sam previously worked for the NHS for over 20 years leading large scale changes to improve and integrate health, social care and voluntary services across Cheshire and Lancashire and South Cumbria.
The Revd Johannes Nobel
Green Ambassador for the Diocese of York (Diocesan Environment Officer)
The Revd Johannes 'Jan' Nobel is the ‘Green Ambassador’ for the Diocese of York. He believes that the Climate Crisis provides many opportunities for our mission and worship.
Associate Programme Leader for Mustard Seed
Paul works in Middlesbrough and Guisborough Deaneries to develop Stepping Up, where people from local parishes come together once a week to grow as disciples of Jesus. He previously worked at Holywood Parish as the youth worker and for the Message Trust’s Redcar Community Grocery as manager. Paul comes from Belfast and lives in Redcar with his wife, Sarah, and their young daughter.
Safeguarding Trainer and Volunteer Coordinator
Jenny was a Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser for 12 years in the Northern Province, previously having been an Education Safeguarding lead in a Local Authority. She brings many years’ safeguarding experience and having been born and brought up in Liverpool, where they talk a lot, says she has a fund of relevant situations which help to promote both good understanding and best practice in safeguarding across the Diocese of York.
General Manager - Wydale Hall
Mark has overall responsibility for managing Wydale, for vision and strategy, for staffing and finance and for ensuring that Wydale sticks to the plan to be a prayerful community renewing the Church’s mission. Mark was Head of Operations at The Belfrey in York before becoming General Manager of Wydale in January 2015.
School Buildings Officer
Simon advises on school development, property and trust matters and is responsible for the financial management of capital projects in voluntary aided schools. His other responsibilities include liaising with local authorities and consultants, and he also handles the Total Property Management scheme in conjunction with DBE Services Ltd. Simon is also involved with the project management of academy conversions.
Start of Lay Ministries Adviser
Julia encourages both new and existing lay ministries, discovering and revealing the gifts of the whole people of God so that we as a church can engage in God’s mission to the whole of life. She is responsible for formation for ministry for Authorised Lay Ministers and Licensed Lay Ministers as well as informal Lay Ministry resourcing.
Director of Finance
Kathryn is the Director of Finance and provides a full range of financial services to the Diocese including responsibility for the day to day financial management, leading and developing the Finance Team, overseeing the Property Team and taking a key a role in developing financial strategies. She is also Company Secretary to The York Diocesan Board of Finance Ltd.
The Venerable Sam Rushton
Archdeacon of York
Sam served as Archdeacon of Cleveland from 2015 to 2019, and was previously Diocesan Adviser for Licensed Ministry, Warden of Readers, Area Dean of Chippenham and Associate Minister of the North Chippenham Group of Churches in the Diocese of Bristol.

The Rt Revd Dr Eleanor Sanderson
Bishop of Hull
Eleanor became Bishop of Hull in 2022 after serving her previous ordained ministry in Aotearoa New Zealand. Ordained in 2005, she served as Vicar of St Alban’s, Eastbourne, Chaplain to Wellesley College, and Canon Theologian to the Diocese of Wellington before her appointment as Assistant Bishop there. In the Diocese of Wellington, she led intentional discipleship programmes which resource Christians to go deeper in their relationship with God and equip them to build up mission and discipleship with others.

Assistant Director of Education
Olivia has particular responsibility for church school, Christian distinctiveness, including SIAMS Manager, RE and Collective Worship. She supports schools in strengthening their Christian distinctiveness and on Religious Education and collective worship by producing resources, putting on training events, sharing good practice and developing networks. Olivia co-ordinates the delivery of support for schools through our Service Level Agreement and is the link adviser for many schools. Part of her role is to help schools prepare for SIAMS and to work with them in putting together and implementing their post-inspection action plan. She is also responsible for managing the SIAMS programme and the training and support of SIAMS inspectors. Olivia also offers support and training to clergy and others who work with schools.
Kristian works with our Director for Strategic Transformation, including co-ordinating reports across the workstreams and projects of the Living Christ’s Story Transformation programme, and identifying ways of analysing current work strands in order to refocus where necessary.
Director of Communications and Parish Resourcing
Martin heads up internal communication, external media relations and has oversight of the Generous Giving Team. He held a similar communications role from 1999 to 2008 and returned to York in 2017 after five years as head of communications in the Diocese of Newcastle.
Martin works Monday to Thursday most weeks.
Revd Derek Simpson
IME Phase 2 Training Adviser
Derek is part-time (one day a week) IME (Phase 2) Training Adviser for curates in the Cleveland Archdeaconry, and works closely with Mike and Pete. He holds this responsibility alongside being the Rector of Thirsk, having previously held posts in London for 28 years.
Academic Tutor - YSOM York Hub
Jo is Academic Tutor at the York Hub of the York School of Ministry, carrying responsibility for the admission, teaching, learning and assessment of students studying on the Foundation Degree in Theology and Ministry programme. Anita is the first point of contact for the Education Department and, if she cannot deal with queries herself, directs them to the member of the Team who can. She handles communication with schools, bookings for conferences and training events, the administration of SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican & Methodist Schools) and the appointment of foundation governors.
The Rt Revd Dr John Thomson
Bishop of Selby
Brought up in Uganda, John studied at York University and then at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He served his curacy at Ecclesall, Sheffield from 1985 to 1989. From 1989 to 1992 he worked in higher education in South Africa. From 1993 to 2001 he was Vicar of St Mary Doncaster, and gained his PhD at Nottingham University. In 2001 he became Director of Ministry in the Diocese of Sheffield. John was consecrated as Bishop of Selby in July 2014, and is the Diocese's ambassador for Rural Life and Faith.
Diocesan Director of Education
Andrew is the Diocesan Director of Education and is responsible for managing the work of the Education Department and the lead officer in the development of the Board of Education strategy and policies for working with children and young people in schools, colleges and universities. He works closely with the Department for Education and local authority colleagues on school organisational matters and offers advice and support to schools on academy and collaboration frameworks. He also represents the Board in appropriate contexts at local and national level. Andrew is a director of the Diocese of York Educational Trust (DYET).

Philippa supports schools in the development, monitoring and evaluation of their Christian distinctiveness, Religious Education and collective worship and in their preparation for SIAMS. She delivers support to schools through our Service Level Agreement and is the link adviser for a number of schools.
Dr Mike Tyler
Mike maintains office systems in support of the work of the Safeguarding Advisers, and additionally organises and supports strategic and operational safeguarding group meetings. He processes safeguarding checks through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for the diocese and for parishes, advising on process and flagging issues on certificates as required.
Discipleship Adviser and Strategy Enabler
Sammi works with both individuals and churches to deepen our discipleship – a key element in helping us become more Christlike. She is champion for discipleship across the Diocese, developing and curating resources which embed faith in everyday life as well as those which help us to pray. She is also involved in enabling the Mission and Ministry Team to support the delivery of “Re-imagining Mission and Ministry”.
Canon Peter Warry
Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive
Born and bred in West Yorkshire, Peter studied at Lancaster University and arrived in the Diocese of York in 1986 to work in operational research at Rowntree Mackintosh. He became Operational Research Manager for Nestlé UK before joining a US business planning software company as European Development Director. He became Diocesan Secretary in 2006 and is an active member of St Luke's, York.
The Revd Pete Watson
IME Phase 2 Adviser for the York Archdeaconry
Pete Watson is part-time (one day a week) IME Phase 2 Adviser for the York Archdeaconry and Rector of Brayton. He did his theological and ministerial training at Cranmer Hall, has been ordained 9 years, is an ex-German teacher, graduate in Arabic and Social Anthropology from St Andrews University, and PGCE at Westminster College, Oxford. Born in India, Pete spent formative years in Bangladesh and India, and is proud to be a Glaswegian!
Clergy Housing Officer
Lisa is the Clergy Housing Officer, and is pleased to help with enquiries about clergy housing, inspection, repairs and maintenance. This includes all Parsonages, PCC owned property currently used to house Stipendiary Clergy and diocesan owned Assistant Ministers' Houses.

The Revd Dr Jenny Wright
Chaplain to the Archbishop of York
Originally from South Africa, Jenny was ordained in 2015 and served her title at Old St Paul's Church in Edinburgh. Latterly she was Associate Priest at Christ Church, Morningside in the Scottish Episcopal Church, an associate tutor with the Scottish Episcopal Institute, convenor of the Church in Society Committee and on the editorial board of the SEI Journal.
The Chaplain supports the Archbishop in all aspects of his ministry within the Diocese of York and beyond.
