We are able to provide a confidential, safe, and non-judgmental space with a qualified practitioner who will hold open that space and help determine and facilitate what is needed in terms of conversation. Thoughts, feelings and experiences can be explored, and ways forward considered, as well as resources offered for coping with what presents now and in the future.
There are many reasons why someone might seek therapeutic support, for example:
- Stress of many kinds, including personal and/or work related
- Bereavement/loss
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Major life change/transition
- Trauma, past or recent/ongoing
- Isolation
- Abuse
- Addiction
- Relational difficulties, personal and/or professional
- Sexual difficulties
- Financial worries
- Spiritual malaise/crisis
- Longer term mental /physical health conditions, including chronic pain
- Recent diagnosis, for example of a neurodivergent condition
It is also possible a person may not really know why they wish to come, but sense that talking in a confidential way with a qualified person would help. This is completely okay, and having some sessions may give a chance for clarity and a renewed sense of personal agency, even in difficult times.
We offer the above service to our clergy and their families, our licensed lay ministers, and our diocesan employees. There is also scope for some brief work for other church officers depending on need and circumstance. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis and upon application to the Diocesan Adviser in Pastoral Care.
All referrals come via the Diocesan Adviser in Pastoral Care in the first instance and are professionally and confidentially held and managed. People are seen both by the Adviser, and also other appropriately qualified practitioners to whom they may refer if an individual or individuals wish to pursue work.
There is an initial offer of 12 sessions paid for by the diocese. It is possible to review this on completion if it is felt that more work is indicated. This is considered on a case-by-case basis and in discussion with the Diocesan Adviser and the therapist, if they are not the Adviser.
