What is Understanding Christianity?
Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9. The key purpose of the resource is to support pupils developing their understanding of Christianity, as a contribution to their understanding of the world and their experience within it.
Teachers attending this course will:
•
Be able to use this innovative resource package for better learning about Christianity from EYFS to KS3
• Consider the place of concepts, creativity, theology and textual learning in
RE through exploring inspiring examples of teaching and learning ideas
• Develop their own skills as a teacher of RE by using this major,
fully-resourced approach.
The Training Package
Following recommendations from the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring and the Teacher Development Trust that effective training should be intense and sustained, the expectation is that teachers in primary schools will have 12-15 hours of CPD on Understanding Christianity. There will be gaps between encounters when schools will try out the approach, returning to explore further.
On Day 1, each school attending will receive the resources to support implementation and complete the initial modules of training including the key elements of the approach the ‘big story’ of the Bible and the teaching model.
Following a gap to support trialling back in school Day 2 will include modules on reading text, planning and curriculum design.

The Understanding Christianity Resource Pack includes:
A Teacher’s Handbook
Sample units of work, from Foundation Stage 2 through to Year 9
The Big Frieze illustration, setting the concepts within a wider biblical context
Online access to additional materials and support
Please note these materials are only available to those signed up to complete training
Costs:
There will be a cost of £150 per person if the school has not accessed training before and a pack is required. Schools who have accessed training before and have the pack can access the training for new members of staff for £100. This charge will cover the 2 days of training, all the resources, lunch and refreshments on both days.
