Admission of Six new Canons Provincial

The Dean of York, the Very Revd Vivienne Faull, will officiate over the Admission of six new Canons Provincial for the Diocese of York and the Northern Province at Evensong on Thursday 12 November.

The honorary title of ‘Canon Provincial’ is enshrined in The 1999 Cathedrals Measure and provides for Provincial representation to support the work of York Minster.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu will present four of the new canons for Admission at Thursday’s service. They are:

• Caroline Boddington, to be appointed Canon Provincial of York in recognition of the support and wisdom as Archbishops’ Secretary for Appointments
• Lionel Lennox, to be appointed Canon Provincial of York in recognition of the support and wisdom as Registrar of the Province and Diocese of York and advisor on matters of ecclesiastical law
• Sir Philip Mawer to be appointed Canon Provincial of York in recognition of the support and wisdom through a series of Symposia and in relation to matters on the Church of England agenda
• The Revd Professor Oliver O’Donovan to be appointed Canon Provincial and Provincial Theologian of York in recognition of the support and wisdom through a series of Symposia and in relation to matters on the Church of England agenda.

Admission services for the remaining two new Canons Provincial - Frank Field, the Labour Member of Parliament for Birkenhead and Julia Unwin, Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust - will be held later.

Commenting on the service, Vivienne Faull said that the appointment of the new Canons Provincial, recognises their outstanding commitment, support and contribution to the life of the Church, their communities and to wider society over many years. She said, “These appointments allow a place of affection and friendship to be created in our life for those members of the extended Minster family with whom we have a special regard or relationship, but who may not be resident in the Diocese of York or in the Northern Province.

“The honorary title of Canon Provincial allows us in particular to recognise individuals who made a distinguished contribution to the building up of Church and society, not least in the North of England, and to honour our links with other churches within the Anglican Communion and beyond.”

The service on Thursday 12 November starts at 5.15pm and will last for just over an hour. Everyone is welcome to attend.
