as part of a wider mission weekend to share God’s love in Middlesbrough.
On Friday morning, the Archbishop will be visiting Macmillan Academy School and joining them for a Remembrance Day service and broadcast with pupils from Archibald Primary School. Steve Urskin, Assistant Curator from the Green Howards Museum and Matt Kiernan, a retired Royal Navy Commander will also be present and leading on an art project at the Academy entitled ‘Medals’.
Phil Latham, Principal of Macmillan Academy said; “Our remembrance service is a special event on our calendar and is the only occasion when the whole school community stops what they would normally be doing as we remember the service and sacrifice made by those who fought in the Great War. This year’s service has been created by the academy’s art and drama departments with support from Beamish Museum and the Green Howards Museum, Richmond. We are delighted that the Archbishop of York has chosen to join us this year in what we hope will be a poignant and memorable service.”
On Friday afternoon, the Archbishop will visit Ayresome School before leading The Big Bash at 6pm, a drumming event for children aged 7 to 11 years at St Barnabas Church Hall, TS5 6JR. All children are invited to bring a pan, pot or drum along to join in. On Friday evening, the Archbishop will be joining the Ceilidh evening at St George’s Church, Normanby which is taking place from 7-10pm. A pie and pea supper is included in this.
Saturday starts at 8.30am at The Fork in the Road, Linthorpe Road TS1 5DE for a men’s breakfast led by Bishop Paul and Archbishop Sentamu; the Archdeacon of Cleveland Sam Rushton will be leading a women’s group at the same venue. Following this, the Archbishop’s mission team will join Father Terry Leathley in the Brambles Farm urban estate from approx. 10.30am where they will be available for talk and prayer near the free coffee van.Fr Terry said: “There isn’t a church building in Brambles Farm so there isn’t anywhere that I can reach out to residents from. I decided to get out there with a coffee van, you can’t miss it! As I hand out free coffee to all who I meet, it’s a chance for me to demonstrate God’s love in action. My hope is that people might like to find out more and share God’s love with others too”.
At lunchtime, the Archbishop will visit the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art with David Budd, Elected Mayor of Middlesbrough and Kate Morris, the Lay Dean of Middlesbrough Deanery. Teesside University students will join them for a Q & A on the big questions of life and faith.
At 2pm, Bishop Paul will attend the ‘Singing for the Brain’ service at the Church of the Ascension, Penrith Road, TS3 7JR with Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough and the Alzheimer’s Society. This is an interactive service with relaxation and breathing warm ups as well as many wide-ranging tunes chosen by visitors’ memories and preferences for all to sing-along to.
Bishop Paul said: “We aim to be dementia-friendly churches in a dementia-friendly community, so that people can be active and independent as long as possible. Music and worship are important elements. Everyone is welcome at this service, to take part and to get some ideas to use in your own church.”
At 4pm, Archdeacon Sam and Archbishop Sentamu will join the Community Service at St Hilda’s Church, Grangetown TS6 7LX – all are welcome to attend. At 7.30pm, join the Archbishop at the Patronal Festival at St Martin’s Whinney Banks TS5 4LA with a buffet following the service – all are welcome to attend.
On Remembrance Sunday, at 9.30am, the Archbishop will preach at the St Barnabas 125 Years Celebratory Parade Service before taking part in the Act of Remembrance at 11am at The Cenotaph, Linthorpe Road with Bishop Paul and alongside local and Civic Leaders.
On Sunday afternoon, St Barnabas Church, TS5 6JR is hosting afternoon tea at 2.30pm
which is open for all; there will be light refreshments available, and the
Archbishop will give a short talk about his journey to faith. This is the

the weekend of mission to the Deaneries in the Diocese of
York. The next mission will be in South Holderness from 1 to 3 December.
