The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is to share daily online extracts of his chosen Advent book for 2018 ‘The Art of Advent’ to encourage all to know something of the closeness of the Kingdom of God this Christmas.

The Art of Advent is written by Jane Williams and is published by SPCK. Illustrated in full colour with nearly forty famous and lesser-known masterpieces of Western art, the book leads the reader into a deeply prayerful response to all that the paintings convey to the discerning eye. There is a painting, reflection and prayer for each day from the beginning of Advent (Sunday 1 December) to Epiphany (Sunday 6 January).

The Archbishop said: “I chose this book to be my Advent book for 2018 as it offers an excellent foundation for parish and small group discussions in Advent and throughout the year. I am delighted to be able to share each day’s painting and a question for reflection from the book. I commend the book for wider reading – it is thought provoking, challenging, surprising and I have found the prayer at the end of each entry prompted my heart to ring with joy and delight in God.”

‘The Art of Advent’ extracts are to be published on the Archbishop’s website and are supplied with permission from SPCK
