The Association of Church Accountants and Treasurers (ACAT) has designed this course to equip both new and experienced treasurers with the core knowledge needed to carry out their administrative role. Administration, including finance, is a key ministry in every church, a view supported by scripture in 1 Corinthians 12:28, which states:

“And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.” (ESV)

The role of a treasurer varies between churches and can cover a wide remit where the treasurer acts as a facilitator. This course is structured around five key areas:

  • Treasurer as Trustee – this section outlines the legal framework for charities and the duties of charity trustees, of whom the treasurer may be one.
  • Treasurer as Bookkeeper – this section addresses day-to-day management of church finances and accounting, exploring the systems a church may have in place for routine operations and the basic principles of charity accounting.
  • Treasurer as Planner – this section is primarily about budgeting but also addresses some concepts of risk management.
  • Treasurer as Tax Optimiser – this section covers what charities need to know to take advantage of Gift Aid and GASDS, as well as a few points about VAT
  • Treasurer as Compliance Officer – this section covers the requirements on charities for preparation of their year-end documents and external scrutiny.

Due to the very successful course that The Diocese of York put on earlier in the year, we had promised to put the same course in each deanery, but due to the Covid19 had to be cancelled. We are delighted that ACAT has adapted the course and is now offering it via Zoom.

The course has been split into 3 sessions, spread over 3 weeks. Each session will be approximately an hour and a half.

We have negotiated 20 free spaces for Treasurers in the Diocese of York in each of the three time slots offered: 10.00am on three consecutive Saturday mornings, 2.00pm on each of three consecutive Saturday afternoons, and 7.00pm on each of three consecutive Tuesday evenings. You must choose one of these options; your booking includes all three sessions in that time slot and you should attend all three sessions in order to gain the maximum benefit.

Please book one of the courses using the links below, and to get the full benefit please attend all 3 sessions.
Note: if you book directly with ACAT instead of using these links, you will be charged to attend!
