It was easy enough to spot St Paul's, Holgate, York on the Sunday morning of our Diocesan Come and See Mission weekend (12-15 March); not too many churches around York regularly have a scarecrow-Superman outside them. Lorna Heatley couldn’t resist.

Inside the church, Superman was joined by Aslan (of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe fame) as well as a fisherman flanking the altar. This was a special children’s service, which welcomed the children of the nearby Church Primary School regardless of their faith, and so featured skits and modern worship songs played by a band at the front.

The service also included Bishop of Basingstoke in the Diocese of Winchester, David Williams, who reminisced on the weekend, saying “It feels like I’ve lived a whole life in four days!” and remembering a hen party who prayed outside York Minster with him, after putting false moustaches on him and Dean of York, Bishop Jonathan Frost.
