Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull have achieved “Music Mark” accreditation, an initiative that rewards and aids schools in their music programmes.

Music Mark was created in order to help further develop and encourage music programmes in school across the nation. In an email to the headmaster of Archbishop Sentamu Academy, Music Mark Chief Executive Bridget Whyte praised the high quality of the music education offered at the school, and said “Your dedication to offering and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum is both welcomed and celebrated”.

Principal Chay Bell spoke on the accreditation, saying “We're absolutely delighted to receive the Music Mark award. Music plays a large part in the academy's identity, from; school productions, christmas concerts, tuition and our very popular choir club. This is an exciting time for our Music Department, I look forward to seeing what the next year brings”.

Music has long been a staple in schools, with a plethora of benefits to children including increasing their creativity, helping them with their coordination, and even assisting them in maths. It even helps some with their self esteem. “I've loved having drumming lessons at school, before them I was very quiet and shy” says Ethan, a year 11 pupil at Archbishop Sentamu Academy. “I now feel a lot fitter, more confident and I have made lots of friends through being in a band. I am a lot more involved with shows and I have played drums and percussion at lots of local festivals”.

This is the latest in a long line of accolades and achievements made by Archbishop Sentamu Academy since it’s conversion to academy status in 2008, including a record high of GCSE and A-Level results this past August, and playing hosts to the inaugural Diocese of York Cup, a new Rugby tournament played between the secondary schools in the Diocese of York, earlier this year.
