An art competition organised by churches in the Selby Deanery attracted entries from a number of local schools including Barlby Bridge, Selby Abbey Primary School, Monk Fryston Primary School, Read School Drax, Aberford and Micklefield Primary Schools, and Barlow and Hambleton Primary Schools. The competition attracted great interest with over 400 entries received from schools and individuals.

The theme was how children and young people have been ‘Being Light in Difficult Times’ and is part of a wider competition run by The Diocese of York. Winners from the Selby Deanery will go forward to the larger Diocesan competition, the overall winners, to be chosen later this month, will be invited for tea with the Archbishop of York at Bishopthorpe Palace.

The artwork has been on display in Selby Abbey and All Saints Church, Sherburn.

Local prize winners include Year 1, Abigail from Micklefield Primary School, and Year 2, Maisie from Micklefield Primary School. Pictured are Trinity Keane and Kaytlin Hallewell from Selby High School, winners of the overall prize in the KS3 competition.

Prizes were kindly donated by Selby SCRAP Store, Sonia Hampshire of ‘Paint and Create’, an art workshop, and the ‘Painting Pot’ in Selby.
