When children and staff from Fylingdales Church of England Primary School travelled from near Whitby to the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate during July, they had high hopes of a win but it still came as a wonderful surprise.

Executive Headteacher Helen Thompson explains: "We're incredibly proud of our Reception class, who were crowned the winners of the annual Vegetable Box competition.

"The children started their growing journey back in January and they have completed every stage in the process from building the box, to planning the planting for their 'roast dinner' theme, and even created their own signs for the box"

The school's approach to the fifth Mark of Mission, 'To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth', has brought the children first-hand experience of tilling and tending to grow their own food.

"They have tended and nurtured their vegetables and have learned so many skills throughout. They created a diary of their growing journey and they had to give a presentation to the judging panel who came out to school, and then at the Great Yorkshire show itself.

"The children were the youngest finalists in the competition and they spoke with such confidence, passion and enthusiasm as they shared their knowledge and experiences.

"It has been an incredible experience for the children and I can't thank the staff enough for providing such a memorable experience for the children.

"We would like to thank the Bishop of Whitby who came to see the children giving their presentation; it helped to make their day extra special."
