There have been so many developments in our understanding of the spirituality and faith development of children and young people over the last few years. Sometimes when we are busy doing, it is hard to get the time, or the energy, to find out more and keep up to date with how these understandings can transform our practice. We will be offering a wide variety of training opportunities across the Diocese, so make sure you sign up for the monthly mailing, if you haven't already done so, to find out more.

Safeguarding Training

It is really important that all volunteers that work with children and young people have completed the basic levels of safeguarding training (C0 and C1). These are available online and can be completed in your own time in a few hours. Leaders of events and activities should also attend C2 training, and consider doing the S3 - Responding to Domestic Abuse training. There are a number of dates available on the Diocesan website and the training is delivered across the Diocese, free of charge.

Certificate in Children's Ministry

We are partnering with Cliff College to offer a Certificate in Children's Ministry. This is being delivered at Cliff College in Derbyshire, 14th to 18th October 2019. The cost for the course and full board in ensuite accommodation is £435.

Hosted by Ian White, Senior Tutor and Short Course Programme Leader, the course is led by Carolyn Edwards, with contributions from the Cliff College Faculty, and other expert adjuncts. There is time for personal reflection and social space, as well as teaching delivered via lectures, seminars and workshops with practical as well as theoretical applications. The course aims to enable new learning and provide the student with skills and resources for both individual and church application.

Subject areas include:

  • Spirituality of the child
  • Faith Development
  • The Child in the Church
  • Being a children’s leader
  • Working in teams

The aim of the teaching is to introduce the latest thinking on children’s spirituality and faith development and resource leaders in this important ministry.

‘It will be excellent to welcome Carolyn Edwards back to Cliff College. We are really looking forward to working together on this important course focussed on our key ministry among children, both in the church, and in the wider community. Designed to both encourage and up-skill, this course provides some of the necessary theological and biblical training needed for this important area of ministry.’ – Ian White; Programme Leader; Short Course Programme, Cliff College.

Students say of the Short Course certificate programme: “It was all totally invaluable and I wouldn’t change a thing.” “Informative, challenging, reflective, resourcing, encouraging, enabling and empowering.” “It will be hard to hold me back on things I will do! I need to go back, reflect, pray, discern the next steps. But as a ‘way of doing and being’, it’s been brilliant to take that away.”

Participants gain a Cliff College Certificate by completing the required assessment work following the teaching week. Successful students will be invited to the Cliff College graduation ceremony. Students can choose not to do the assessment work by ‘auditing’ the course.
