We are recruiting two MES participants who will be based at Wydale Hall (wydale.org), near Scarborough.

Wydale is the retreat and conference centre for the Diocese of York, which lives out its calling as 'A prayerful community renewing the church’s mission', and is situated near Yorkshire’s east coast and on the edge of the North York Moors. Working under the dynamic leadership of its two resident managers, this vital part of the life of our diocese is set in beautiful countryside within its own large and well-kept grounds. This exciting opportunity is fairly unique among the schemes as it offers an experience of the deeply rural parish, economically deprived coastal areas, and a ministry of hospitality.

The Hall has a small resident community who keep a pattern of prayer and welcome, and offers event space and a centre for retreats, both individual and group. As a base for a year-long MES, participants will be able to join in the work of the hospitality team, engage with a wide range of events held at the Hall, experience rural ministry in the local parishes, and also in the context of the more urban communities on the coast where life can be tough. The MES is free to do with expenses and accommodation included.

The year will give the opportunity to experience ministry in a variety of challenging contexts under the supervision of experienced practitioners, to engage in vocational discernment, and to deepen your own discipleship through study within the diocese’s provision. You will also share the life of this community as part of the Wydale family. As part of the Wydale team you will gain unique insights into ministry on all levels – lay and ordained, student ministry, quiet retreats, family events, and also seeing our bishops and Archbishop at work. The Hall also hosts national discernment panels for those exploring ordained ministry.

Because of its rural setting, a driving licence would be very helpful, as would having your own car if you are wanting to make full use of the local area. It is a mile walk to the main road for a bus, and 1½ to the nearest village. It is a 20 minute drive into Scarborough and less than an hour to York.
