The Rt Revd Dr John Thomson, Bishop of Selby, presented 25 Year 6 Pupils with their Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award at Barwic Parade Community Primary School, Selby.

The Bishop of Selby, who is a keen cyclist and fundraiser, said: “Planning fundraising events such as the disco the pupils organised for Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 to raise funds for kitchen equipment at the Salvation Army centre takes considerable skills. These 25 Young Leaders are inspiring, not just their families and friends, but the whole community here. They have a bright future ahead of them. Congratulations!”

Melanie Hind, Young Leaders Award Coordinator at Barwic Parade Community School said: “The pupils involved in the Award have really grown in confidence and have been able to find their voices and express themselves. It has been such a joy to see such leadership skills emerge! Improved confidence will mean that they will leave primary school much better equipped to face the challenges of secondary school.”

A Young Leader, Bryony, aged 11 said “The Young Leader Award has given me the chance to understand what I am capable of.”

The Young Leaders Awards, available for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, are an active citizenship resource for schools and there are over 24,500 young people now signed up across the north of England.
