Church Explorers

In 2015, the Diocese is partnering with the York Archaeological Trust for their Yorkshire Medieval Festival in August. The Festival includes a strand called Church Explorers, where churches put on unique events to encourage people to visit the church and discover its stories. The only criteria for getting involved are:

  1. Your church must be in Yorkshire
  2. The event must be on the theme of the Middle Ages (defined as 1066 – 1485): this need not be limited to the fabric of a building, but should be linked in with an aspect of your local history
  3. Any Festival events must take place in the month of August 2015.
  4. You must confirm your plans to get involved with York Archaeological Trust by 19 January 2015.

We can use our rich histories to share why our churches were built to the glory of God and to encourage people to take part in the life of the church today. It doesn’t matter if your church has little medieval architecture visible today; what’s important is sharing our stories.

Church Explorers enables us to work in partnership with YAT and take advantage of their marketing and publicity, and we’re keen that as many churches as possible take part. Please find below a letter explaining more about the Festival and Church Explorers, a form to confirm you’re taking part, advice on how your church could take part, and advice for working with schools.

Roy Thompson, Diocesan Tourism Officer, will be holding a workshop at Sheriff Hutton church on Wednesday 11th March 2015, to give ideas on how your church can get involved. If you’d like help before then on what to do, please contact Roy on thompsonroy5@gmail.com or 01347 878644.

Remember, if you’d like to get involved with the Festival and Church Explorer, please complete the form below and submit this to York Archaeological Trust by 19 January 2015.
