Have you got a spare winter coat you could give away this year? St Michel le Belfrey church, York, is collecting spare winter coats for homeless people as the cold weather comes in, via Arclight and the Never Give Up group.

Alex Willmott from St Michel le Belfrey suggested the idea after noticing how many homeless people in York were braving the cold evenings without winter clothing. He said: “Like many people, I wish I could do more to help the York homeless community, but it’s a complex issue. There are also experts in this field like Arclight and the Never Give Up Group. As I walked through the city one evening I saw that many of the homeless guys had thin jackets on. And the truth is that I have a spare winter coat that I could easily donate. That’s where the #WinterCoat campaign started”.

Mark Rance from St Michel le Belfrey said, "We hope you agree that this is a great idea and one that you can respond to. In reality, most of us will probably have a spare winter coat that we could donate to this project, and we hope it’s an initiative that other churches might decide to adopt as well. Arclight does a great job at accommodating the homeless community and our church-based Never Give Up Group specialises in supporting the homeless, addicted, lonely and marginalised in the city. Working together, we genuinely believe we can help those on the streets stay a lot warmer this winter."

Perhaps you already have a spare coat for a man or a woman which you know you won't use? Or maybe you could buy one from a charity shop or even an new one? To donate a coat please deliver it to The Parish Centre, 11/12 Minster Yard, York YO1 7HH Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm or to the church on a Sunday up to and including 9 November.
