In 1965 the parish church of Acomb decided to plant a church to serve the new community in the housing estate called ‘Chapelfields’. 50 years later and they are celebrating their half centenary by hosting a community fun day and celebration in their grounds on Ridgeway, Acomb on Sunday 10th May. The official opening is at 12.30pm but the Energise Street Sports’ Climbing Wall will be available from 12pm.

With lots of activities including an African drumming circle and crafts, a buffet and a chance to commemorate the five decades of service, this is a great chance to celebrate with the community. Guests will be joined by the Archbishop Sentamu, who will share in the fun and will remind everyone the real purpose of the church in the area.

The Revd Peter Horsley, Vicar of St Stephen’s and St Aidan’s Church, says, “The church building is a great resource for us to share with our friends and neighbours in Acomb God’s love. We believe our role, along with the other churches, is to live like Jesus who came not to be served but to serve.”

Each week the parish church in Acomb visits the sick, the bereaved and the housebound, they help families celebrate births and weddings and make themselves available to offer support in the everyday issues of life. Most people will know St Aidan’s Church as the venue for Squeals on Wheels (a parents and toddler group), Messy Church (a service for families) and the monthly Skate Park/Climbing Wall (an initiative in partnership with Chapelfields Community Association and Energise Street Sports.)
