Interim Priest-in-Charge, Osbaldwick w Murton and
‘Green Ambassador’ for the Diocese of York
An ideal post for someone with a real passion for all things environmental and ecological, this new role combines being parish priest in a growing suburb on the eastern edge of the City of York with the newly created role of ‘Green Ambassador’ for the Diocese of York.
We have identified that we are behind the curve in shaping and directing a ‘Green’ vision for our diocese so this aspect of the role will need someone with energy and passion to help us catch-up in all areas of our diocesan life – helping to feed into diocesan building strategies - churches and houses; helping parishes to become more environmentally aware; and leading our teaching and thinking on the theological imperative to conserve and protect God’s creation. Under the oversight of the Bishop of Selby, the Green Ambassador will have a key role in establishing the Diocese of York as a leading diocese in the area of environmental policy and strategy.
At the same time, the appointee will need to work with the parish of Osbaldwick w Murton to reach out to and develop mission and ministry in a growing parish near the developing campus of the University of York. A new eco-friendly, digitally inclusive development of homes has recently been built by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation within the parish and this is just one area where the priest will need to encourage and enable outreach in order to grow the church.
The post has been designated as Interim for 3 years during which time we expect the neighbouring parish of St Hilda’s Tang Hall to become vacant. The expectation is that the appointee will work with the parish of Osbaldwick, and with the outgoing priest in Tang Hall, to enable and encourage the joining of these 2 parishes to create a single benefice in due course.
Between the parish churches of Osbaldwick and Tang Hall, one of the 2 new worshipping communities in the BMO of G2 meets in the Burnholme Community Centre. It is hoped that the appointee will grow relationships with the leadership of G2 to enable closer co-operation in mission in the future.
The parish is looking for:
Someone who is family focussed, clear in their faith; a good preacher and teacher, who is both friendly and sociable in and out of church.
Someone who must be a good manager of people who will encourage others to build on what we have already achieved through nurturing, motivating and affirming the talents and contribution of others.
A person with energy and vision who is able to relate Christian living to every day.
Someone who is a good communicator, who is willing to be seen out and about in the community, who is prepared to engage and have conversations with people from varying backgrounds.
Someone who is effective at keeping the members of the congregation informed and with the compassion to communicate effectively on a one to one level.
Someone who can work collaboratively with others to enhance the strong links that exist locally with other churches, other denominations and wider community agencies.
The Green Ambassador role will require:
Someone with the gifts, skills and knowledge to develop and oversee the implementation of a diocesan environmental strategy which:
enables parishes to respond to the challenges of environmental stewardship;
identifies and publicises examples of good and safe practice;
sets measurable and sustainable outcomes, eg reducing carbon footprint by 2030 (renewable electricity and heating systems in churches, vicarages, offices etc);
and develops systems to monitor achievement of diocesan targets and measureable outcomes.
Someone who can expand, lead and support a network of voluntary Green Advocates across the Diocese to embed the Strategy.
Someone able to provide training, theological and other resources for clergy and lay leaders (liaising with the Director of Training for Missional Ministry) on practical strategies for churches, e.g. reducing carbon emissions in church property.
A clear and skilled communicator who will ensure that environmental stewardship is fully integrated into the diocesan strategic vision.
A supportive and encouraging team of ministers and lay volunteers at a parish level – 2 able and supportive Readers and 2 committed and experienced Church Wardens
A willingness to engage with new ideas for worship and mission

Unfortunately it is not always straightforward for clergy from overseas to be appointed to posts in the Church of England. The policy of the UK Border Agency is that normally the organisation making an appointment has been able to prove that it is impossible to appoint a person who is a national of a European Economic Area country, before a visa giving permission to work will be issued to a person who comes from elsewhere.
