Each of the 21 Deaneries in the Diocese of York worked with their parishes for several months in 2022 to compile a plan in the light of our Diocesan vision of Living Christ's Story, to include goals for the future and the allocation of people and resources to achieve them.

Setting aside her roles as Lay Dean of Scarborough, Lay Member of the Church of England’s General Synod representing the Diocese of York and consequent membership of Diocesan Synod, the Diocesan Pastoral and Property Committees, the Diocesan Board of Finance and the Vacancy-in-See Committee, not to mention her work on the Deaneries Development Group and much, much more, Ros Brewer is still surprised to have been nominated to receive the Royal Maundy this year in recognition of her service to the church and community.

Despite the cold East coast winds over the weekend of Palm Sunday, hundreds of people (including many from outside the churches) attended the South Holderness Deanery outdoor Passion Play, “Easter Story”.

Six years ago I was commissioned by Bishop Richard, then Bishop of Hull, as Area Dean for East Hull. During the past six years I have seen a number of changes, not least in Bishop and Archdeacon, and also Rural, latterly Area Deans.

Over a hundred people turned up to a Healing Service we held in Hunmanby during Archbishop Sentamu's Scarborough Deanery Mission in October 2017 - a number that took us a little by surprise.

The shift of emphasis in the function of the deaneries to a focus on mission and nurture - the idea of being 'a network of churches inspiring, influencing and leading mission and ministry' inspired the Deanery to change from ‘Synod’ to ‘Gathering’, and the laity and clergy all together working out three priorities.

South Holderness has a lot going for it – relatively small (25 churches), big skies for big thoughts, and a very strong sense of identity. You would have if you lived East of Hull, terra icognita for many. Developing the Deaneries was to us like manna from heaven.

Three local churchyards have been visited by Easingwold Deanery’s ‘Caring for the Environment’ group in order to learn about and promote the ways they are managed to encourage wildlife, as well as being a dedicated and dignified space for the parish.

The Archbishop of York will be re-visiting the Harthill Deanery (around the market town of Driffield, in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds) for three days of mission from Saturday 2 to Monday 4 June 2018. This mission was rescheduled from March because of the heavy snowfall.
