Animal lovers - and their pets - were to the fore in Scarborough on the Saturday morning of our ‘Come and See’ Mission (12-15 March) when John Carter arrived at St Martin-on-the-Hill…

‘All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small’ was the opening hymn at an Animal Welfare and Blessing service in St Martin’s.

In fact the animals at the service were all dogs of all shapes and sizes, but the service had drawn dog lovers from across the parish, many of whom had never before visited the church.

In the warm and beautiful surroundings of the pre-Raphaelite building, owners were invited to bring their pets forward for a prayer and a blessing, and Vicar, Fr David Dixon started the ball rolling with his own beautiful pet lurcher.

Prayers were said for animal welfare, and words on the importance of animals from Pope John Paul II were read.
