Looking at Churches Study Days focus mainly but not exclusively on mediaeval churches, and are held monthly from October to March at two sites: Wass (near Ampleforth) and Pannal (near Harrogate), at a cost of £25 per person per day.

Each day includes richly illustrated talks on a particular theme, with a range of related literature available to browse, and plenty of opportunity to talk with like-minded people.

There have also been occasional organised field trips, some of which are a simple day out, but others have been longer, such as a week in Rome. You are welcome to come to individual study days, as well as to attend the whole season, and to pass this information on to others who might be interested.

Each day starts at 10.00 am and finishes at 3.00pm, with a Coffee break around 11:15am, and a longer break for lunch at about 1pm. Tea and Coffee are provided, but please bring your own packed lunch.

Originally an extra-mural course of the University of Leeds, the courses are led by Catherine Stallybrass, who has had a lifetime interest in church buildings and history, and gained a certificate in English Medieval Churches from Leeds University to add to her degree in Archaeology and Anthropology.

The courses are now run independently and not-for-profit by Catherine and her husband Mike, who make a charge to cover costs.

“If you would like to join us in exploring the unrivalled heritage of church building in Britain (and occasionally beyond!) now is your chance,” says Mike.
