At only 11 years old, Jayden Newton, a bellringinger from All Saint’s, Roos, has been made a joint winner of the ‘Leading the Ropes Contribution Award” award by ART, the Association for Ringing Teachers.

For this award, “The ringer’s contribution award is not based on ringing ability or attainment but for their contribution to the wider ringing community, for example, within a band, local area, Guild, Association or even the Central Council.”

This prestigious award is judged based on recruitment, teaching, publicity, and tower maintenance, something which, despite his young age, Jayden excels at. The award is also open to people of all ages, making this achievement all the more special. The award ceremony for the event took place on his 11th birthday alongside bell ringers from across the world, all able to join together over Zoom.

Jayden has been a long time bellringer at All Saint’s, regularly assisting with the teaching of new recruits and engaging with everything connected with campanology. He also has previously spoken to BBC Radio Humberside as well as appeared on BBC Look North. Throughout the pandemic when ringing has often been limited to members of just one household, Jayden has been the solitary ringer on Sunday mornings.

Tower Captain, Helen Audley, says “We are very proud of him here at Roos and are so happy that his commitment has been recognised with this award. He will get a certificate which we will display with pride in the church, plus £125 to spend on ringing related items”
