Honouring our communities: Black History Month service at Hull Minster

Worshipers gathered to honour the ministry of Black men and women from across the diocese.

Black History Month service at Hull Minster

Hull Minster welcomed people from across the diocese for a special service marking Black History Month. The event remembered and celebrated the contributions of Black men and women, gathering under this year’s theme: Honouring our Communities.

Members of the congregation prayed for all who have suffered racial discrimination and were invited to commit to racial justice. The Revd Canon Dr Christian Selvaratnam shared reflections from his recent visit to Birmingham, Alabama, exploring what we might learn from the US Civil Rights Movement as we seek justice and reconciliation in our own communities.

Representatives of the Freetown Society spoke about the ongoing partnership between Hull and Freetown in Sierra Leone, and the ways we can support one another across our communities.

Speaking afterwards, the Society’s spokesperson, Karen Okra, said: “It was an honour to participate in an occasion that celebrated, commemorated and recognised Black history, heritage and contributions within our communities.”

We hope that this service will become a regular part of our diocesan life, drawing people together each year to celebrate Black history and renew our shared commitment to justice, unity, and hope in Christ.
