Hull Charterhouse, which provides supported independent accommodation for those aged 60+, recently celebrated its 640th anniversary.
The Charterhouse was founded in 1384 by Michael de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk and son of Sir William de la Pole, Hull’s first mayor 1331 to 1335. The poet Andrew Marvell, whose father was Master of The Charterhouse in the 17th Century, grew up there.
The anniversary was celebrated on Founder’s Day, 1st March 2024 with a worship service in the chapel followed by a feast for Residents, Staff and Trustees.
On Sunday 3rd March 2024 the community welcomed the Bishop of Hull, the Rt Revd Dr Eleanor Sanderson, for a special Anniversary service, followed by a reception. The service also included the licensing and welcome of the 40th Master of The Charterhouse, the Revd Gloria Naylor, who is the first female Master of The Charterhouse. The Revd Naylor was previously the vicar of St James Church in Sutton-on-Hull, and comes with a wide range of experiences, skills, and knowledge.
This month, one of the residents will hold a community event to celebrate his 100th birthday.
Mike Craughan, Clerk to the Trustees, says,
“We were pleased that Bishop Eleanor has a head for heights and was willing to preach from the pulpit! We will be holding more special events over the year. Please do come and visit us on 14th-15th September 2024, when we will be taking part in England’s festival of history, heritage, and culture – Heritage Open Days.”
