What better day could there be to consecrate two new bishops to serve in the Diocese of York – alongside the new Bishop of Sodor and Man – than the 10th October, the feast day of St Paulinus, the first Bishop of York in the 7th Century?
Dr Flora Winfield will serve as Bishop of Selby, Barry Hill as Bishop of Whitby, and Tricia Hillas will be Bishop of Sodor and Man.
A wet and windy Thursday morning saw York Minster well-filled with family, friends and supporters of the new bishops, with clergy and parishioners particularly from the Archdeaconries and Cleveland and York.
Preacher Canon Dr Paula Gooder took us back to the journey to England made in the 7th Century by Saints Paulinus, Mellitus and Justus, remembered today in the churches they founded in York, London and Rochester, and drawing a parallel in the new ministries beginning today for the three new bishops. They too are setting out in trust and in faith, she said, and will be upheld by “The one who never has and never will leave us.”
“Bishops are ordained to be shepherds of Christ’s flock and guardians of the faith of the apostles, proclaiming the gospel of God’s kingdom and leading his people in mission.” – from the order of service
