Honorary Chaplains are needed to support the work of the Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care Team at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals Trust. You will be based at the York Hospital site but be part of the Trust wide team.
The post is to provide support for the Trust Chaplaincy out-of-hours on call and as part of a flexible 24/7 service. On call sessions currently operate between 5pm-9am Monday to Sunday and 9am-5pm Saturday. As the position is unpaid we ask for a minimum commitment of six months and one shift per month.
As an autonomous, qualified practitioner the role is to respond to the pastoral, spiritual and religious needs of patients, their carers and staff. The Chaplaincy team, of which Honorary Chaplains are a member, provides for the pastoral, spiritual and religious needs of patients, staff, carers and visitors within the Trust.
While the religious doctrines and faith of each chaplain is an important and essential foundation for the fulfilment of their duties, we are committed to diversity and inclusion. Honorary chaplains will work with colleagues of different faith and belief groups and care for people from various faiths and those without religious belief.
The team’s aim is to offer support which is sensitive, appropriate to individual need and which upholds our Trust values and behaviours.
Person Specification
You should be educated to bachelor’s degree level (or equivalent work or life experience) with demonstrable learning in a relevant field such as counselling, pastoral care, psychology, psychotherapy, religious studies or theology.
Endorsement to practice as a healthcare chaplain by a recognized/established sponsoring faith community or belief group.
Substantial, recent pastoral experience in a local faith/belief community setting or equivalent is essential.
Chaplaincy experience within the NHS or within a related acute healthcare setting is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
Based at York hospital you will work within the Chaplaincy team across all Trust sites and will receive full support, training and supervision.
