The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York
York Minster was built for the glory of God. There’s been a place of worship on the site for 1,400 years; the earliest part of the present cathedral was built in the 13th century and the building was largely complete by the late 15th century, after 250 years’ work.
Today York Minster is both the heart of Yorkshire and at the heart of Christianity in the North of England, as a thriving church rooted in the daily offering of worship and prayer.
As the Mother Church of Diocese of York and the seat of the Archbishop of York’s teaching and preaching ministry, the Minster hosts many major services and occasions in the life of the diocese, including ordinations and celebrations of the milestones of the Christian year.
