Canon Peter Warry

Diocesan Secretary & Chief Executive Officer 01904 699500

Since January 2006, as Diocesan Secretary and Chief Executive, Peter has supported the ministries of the Archbishop and his Staff, those employed in any capacity by the Diocesan Board of Finance and all those who serve in parishes across the diocese.

His role, as well as overseeing the legal, financial, synodical and administrative functions that are necessary in a diocese of this size, is to try to ensure that together we do whatever we can to build the life of the diocesan family. That means ensuring that the strategic priorities and operational services are appropriately resourced, managed and coordinated; that the diocese (including its parishes) is compliant with Ecclesiastical, Charity, Education, Employment and Company law; whilst fulfilling a number of statutory responsibilities associated with being a Diocesan Secretary and representing the diocese in the wider arena of the Church of England.

Peter is also a trustee director of the Diocese of York Educational Trust (DYET), the Lady Elizabeth Hastings Charities and Acts 435. Together with his wife Helen, a GP and musician, and their teenage son, he has been an active member of St Luke’s York for over 35 years. His professional background is in Operational Research and, prior to taking on his current role, he also served for many years as Deanery Synod Secretary and Deanery Financial Advisor, as well as a member of Diocesan Synod.
