On Saturday 28th September, members of St Helen’s church at Skipwith and North Duffield held a Poverty Action Day, with stalls in aid of their chosen charities.
A steady stream of visitors to the church enjoyed tea, coffee, homemade cake and scones throughout the day, with homemade soup and rolls at lunchtime. Stalls in aid of Christians Against Poverty, Tearfund, Mercy Ships and Smile Train sold books, games, plants, picture frames, local honey, home grown produce, cakes and preserves.
The stalls raised over £740 in total, plus a mountain of good quality pre-loved clothing collected for The Clothing Bank, a Yorkshire charity tackling clothing poverty. The day proved such a success that another Poverty Action Day is already being planned for next year.
Area Dean, the Revd Jackie Doyle Brett, said: “I was so impressed with what has been achieved in such a short time. I hope this initiative will spread across Derwent Deanery and beyond.”
